THE ART OF DIGITAL PRINT & QUALITY HANDMADE FRAMING

IMG_3641.JPG

Each piece of art is fine-tuned to come alive in print.

With over fifteen years of experience as a self-publishing artist and exhibiting and selling thousands of duplicates of his digitally crafted masterpieces, Jai knows the value of quality replication.

ART OF PRINT

Jai's creations are explicitly crafted to come alive in print.

His unique creative process, infusing handmade art and scans of fabric and textural materials with edited photography, allows him to manipulate digital printing technology and fine-tune his art for the best replication.

For years, Jai experimented with print, often adapting his work style, the materials he used, and other elements in his art to suit the print's surface, the ink used, and the replication method. He understood the dynamic between the ink and canvas or paper and how integral it was to use specific techniques in the creative process to highlight and showcase features or elements in the art, no matter the quality of the surface material.

He gained a substantial amount of knowledge on surface materials, i.e., canvas, fabric, glass and paper,

during his apprenticeship years as a traditional fine artist. Jai used a vast range of pigment-based oil and acrylics to paint on canvas and experimented with the colour, brush strokes or daubs to add textures and to generate light and depth by burning distressing the canvas. He learned the relationship between paint and canvas and manipulated both entities to create effects or specific features in the art. His awareness of these dynamics advanced when he experimented with fine liner pens on paper, charcoal on wax and even spray paint on concrete. No matter the creative material or tool or the surface material, for Jai, an absolute science with a touch of magic was involved in knowing, merging and transcending both materials to generate a

visual experience with and beyond the materials.

Jai's erliers experiemnts with oil painting on cancas

The moment Jai migrated his practice to digital technology and applications, he applied similar principles to his new medium but now, instead of pigments, he had pixels. Instead of canvas, he had a digital file that Jai could print onto an assortment of surfaces. His early experiments with digital printing did not lead to much success or inspiration as the printing technology was undeveloped, less sophisticated to compliment the digital mediums and their capacity. In 1992, software such as paint and photoshop was in its infancy but still had advanced processes to generate dynamic visuals that Jai could not exactly replicate on both domestic and industrial printers. He knew he had to wait for the printing world to catch up before genuinely showcasing digitally created art. Jai didn't want to wait and chose to ignore the surface material in the printing process. He decided to dissect the creative tool, to understand every element of the digital software, its processes, operations, functions and even limitations. He knew that he could manipulate it to achieve whatever visual experience possible if he could understand it, allowing him to express freely as the artists, the creator.

In his words in 1994, "I will know the machine so well, govern it then collaborate with it. Together we will show the world what I see in my imagination, no matter who sees it, how it is seen or when in time. Today I will create a piece of digital art, and no one will know, but tomorrow, digital will transform how we behave and perceive the world, and then I may get the opportunity to share my creativity."

Jai invested twelve years studying a series of software and digital applications. As he learned how to use colours and edit imagery throughout this period, he witnessed the emergence of high def digital technology in printing onto multiple surfaces. He also saw the possibility of light projection and art in a three-dimensional virtual space. No matter the surface, the technology or area, Jai continued to experiment and eventually created a unique process in generating his art that can be applied onto any surface, material and look exactly as he intended.

His process focuses on six areas of his art.

colour manipulation

Tweaking the variables in each pixel and merging

them with scanned photographs of traditional

colour and light.

textural elements

Including scanned photos and hand made replications of rich and subtle textures, overlaying specific area to create depth and highlights.

composition

Fuse the traditional, more conventional way of arranging features with background by layering and merging elements and editing each layer with digital software.

light generation

Generating artificial light sources with texture and distortion to create ambience and atmosphere.

3d elements

Creating 3d models of shapes, objects and patterns to further emphasise areas of the composition and offer a contrast to more natural space

magic

Ignoring the process and injecting my spirit, pain, love, hope, dreams, imagination, and self-awareness into creating and transforming a mechanical process into natural phenomena

He see's beyond the print.

Jai fascination with print began in his childhood and developed as he encountered the process in products, books and eventually in art. He was utterly obsessed with how an image can be replicated onto a surface and transformed into experience.

FINE ART PAPER

Jai chooses a handful of specialised printing processes to replicate his art. Each method is selected to complement the art and enhance its features to showcase its qualities and offer the viewer the most optimised and natural experience possible.

Giclee Print

He often prints his works onto high-quality, grained fine art paper using the process of Giclee. Giclée printing offers both a softness and richness of colour, represents the artist's original digital work. The process involves squirting or spraying microscopic dots of pigment-based ink onto high-quality art paper or canvas. The image is colour corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original work if required. The digital art is fine-tuned to complement the fine art paper, further ensuring fidelity to the original. Our prints are fade & colour shift resistance of up to 200 years.

Framing is an integral part of experiencing art. Each unique piece deserves to be housed in a frame that compliments the art or enhances its presence and allows it to breathe and express itself.

ART OF FRAMING

Jai's creations are beautifully placed within handcrafted Italian frames and ornate enclosures.

For Jai, the framing of his work is an extension of his creativity and allows the viewer to engage with his art completely.

For years, Jai experimented with framing, often adapting the style of frame, the surface, and materials to suit his art's mood and aesthetics. His early encounters with framing his water colour works and illustrations helped him to learn about presentation and the art of displaying visuals. As his artworks developed and became more dynamic in colour, more complex and filled with an assortment of textures and materials, Jai would have to experiment with mounting and framing his works.  He would often encounter challenges due to his art's digital nature, the colours in print, and the extraordinary range of textures within each piece.

ai travelled across Europe, America and South Asia in search of very specific styles and finishes to suit his unique non-traditional artworks. Although he was unable to source framing that he felt would be ideal for his works, he did discover a range of styles and colour that worked well. With over sixteen years of experience and long-lasting relationships with a handful of framing experts worldwide who decorate his art, Jai's masterpieces are framed to enhance the viewer's experience and stand the test of time.

colour

The shade, tone and overall colour of framing will only add value to the artwork. Jai hand-selects his colours to complete each piece.

texture

As Jai's pieces convey an array of textures in print, it is vital to frame the art with surfaces that subtly contain similar textures.

material

It is crucial to provide collectors and buyers of Jai's art with a high-quality product, durable in multiple environments. Each material, from the frame to the glass to the finishings, are made to last.

glass

All Jai sol artworks are covered in the highest quality non-glare, high definition glass. Each pane is manufactured by acid etching one or two surfaces of the glass, providing uniform, evenly diffused surfaces for high-resolution applications. Non-glare glass disperses reflected light, allowing the user to focus on the transmitted image.

slips

Certain pieces of art will require additional elements of framing, including slips being the larger frame. These additions add another layer to the structure and are only used to add gravitas to the art.

mounts and finishings

Jai's framed pieced include a range of finishes and fittings to suit the collectors and buyers' requirements for displaying their art. Our expert framers will assist with selecting the correct solution for hanging, displaying or storing the art.
